The fifth theme in my mind will be umakoti. The reason for
this is that the theme is bride and displaying the South African view of
umakoti is one of the important summations to the topic of bride. This will
thus be one of my major themes of the research, thus both my narrative and
designs will draw their influence from umakoti. The South African makoti,
although living in the modern day is still subject to many of the traditional
roles/rules found within their respective culture and their husband’s cultures.
This will thus be of aid in terms of what jewellery I
design, as its relevance will be influenced by these roles and demands for
umakoti. Thus ultimately the poetry and designs which will be produced will be
a product of this theme.
The formation of the bride/umakoti
Who is she?
What makes a bride umakoti?
What does the term even mean or come from?
Does she even have a true voice?
