Barbara Stutman

Stutman is a contemporary female artist and jewellery designer who uses her work in order to comment on female issues using chiefly symbolism^[1] and irony within her work.  Having a background in fine art, she has used her jewellery as an extension from what she had with her sculptures and paintings.

This report has used Stutman as one of the contemporary examples as her work exhibits narrative characteristic’s which are similar to what this paper will be addressing. Therefore in Chapter Two, the report will provide a brief introduction and background on Stuntman’s work; while also discussing her work in the sequence below.

For the purposes of the paper, when the word symbol or symbolism is discussed, it will be referring to a representation any object, thing, person, feeling, living or any other non-living organism which is the specified subject matter.

For my final slide, I have chosen to give a briefly mention some of the practices which I will be focusing on.

For my seventh slide, I have chosen to define the word umakoti, which I will expand on during the presentation, the reason being that the Xhosa umakoti is the main theme behind  my work.

For the sixth slide, I have chosen to include an example of Xhosa bead work since it is a form of Narrative within the Xhosa culture and one which I will be using within my own jewellery.

For my fifth slide, I have chosen to use the work of Emily as an example of what modern day Narrative jewellery looks like. The thing which I felt was relevant about these chosen images is the fact she has chosen to use materials which are not traditionally used as jewellery manufacturing materials as her main material in order to express her narrative.  Which is why I feel that someone who is being exposed to the concepts for the first time would benefit for them.

For my fourth slide, I have chosen to include three definition, for narrative, narrative jewellery and for narrative poetry. This will aid in my explanation, as these three definitions were the stems in which my own personal definition and understanding branched from. The picture was to illustrate one of the oldest forms of narrative and I chose to include it for effect.

For my third slide, I have chosen to include an example of how another person has used translation between the two mediums of poetry and art. I have chosen to do this so that I can illustrate the meaning of translation to some one who is not familiar with the concept.

For My second slide, I have chosen to include the definition which I found to be the closest to how I want to apply the word in my research. I will go on and explain my own personal interpretation during the actual presentation.
