The stolen bride

The act of bridal abduction(ukutwala in isiXhosa), is believed to be a cultural practice by some which does not only exists in African cultures but is practiced in numerous countries in the world such as Kyrgyzstan. This subject or nature of marriage has been the center of many debates as there was and still is a divide in some communities when it comes to what it truly is. Many view it as a cultural practice which still has a place within in their societies as it has long been a practice within their cultures, while many believe the practice to be not simply abusive but also a denial of women rights.

So which one is it? When should the line be clearly drawn between what is respecting cultural beliefs and opposing the oppressive and unjust acts against women? I believe that line becomes clear when her voice and screams are ignored in the name of culture.

I have been listening and viewing some of the most painful documentaries based on bridal abduction. For now, I will withhold my personal views concerning the matter and simply upload some of these videos I have come across over these past few months.
