Wedding history footnotes

[2] I have listed below some brief historical points on marriage;
• Marriage is universal
• Was not primarily about individual needs of the man and woman
• Marriage is about having a family, children and a lifelong commitment
• A way to accumulate resources, political and economic reasons
• Wife gave up all wealth and rights to the husband.
• Women had to be obedient to husbands and had passive roles
• Marriage is an ancient institution rich with traditions and customs
• Marriage was initially strongly patriarchal
• A woman who wanted to be freed from her husband had to ask him to grant her a divorce, and if he refused she was obliged to stay with him.
