Safety First

In my previous post, I mentioned that I had played around with a few things before I finally started my design and manufacturing process. I have therefore decided to include a few of these playtime items.

In the Xhosa culture, safety pins play an important role to and for umakoti. Upon being welcomed as a bride she is given safety pins and is expected to add to her collection over time. I therefore thought that it would be rather interesting yet at the same time relevant to somehow incorporate safety pins as part of my design collection, and as displayed in the picture below, I bought plenty.
After my purchase I then decided to look through the research I had based on Xhosa imagery meaning. I found a few things, which I decided to play around with to see what would go with my theme. However, as I started the bead work; I was more concerned with what could be done, rather than the specific picture. I just wanted to make a visual of what I had in my head.
